You'll do it Mary. It wasn't sitting in front of a computer that got me where I am today. (er...sitting in front of a computer)

You have, of course, got plenty of Kendal Mint Cake?

Go for it Mary, you should be an honorary member of the Creagh Dhu, following in the foortseps of their 1953 expedition!

Hi Mary!

Very best wishes for a successful attempt on Everest - I know that you and Daisy can do it! I've already started knitting you some warm socks (Merino, naturally), and Little Peewiglet has almost finished knitting Daisy a warm jacket. You're both an inspiration! Yours admiringly, Peewiglet and Little Peewiglet xxx

It is about time someone attempts the direct route on the Nepal side of Everest. Too many weaklings going up the tourist walking path.

Advice? Take some spare socks, a tartan rug and a tin of boiled sweets.

Good luck I hope you succeed!

a brilliant expedition in the grand old tradition of the Empire! Don't forget some woolies for the dear dog, it can get chilly when your tummy's so close to the ground!

Fantastic videos of your training. Should you fail to make it would you permit others to take your dog so at least one of the team gets a second chance.

Are you travelling overland on the back of the motorbike, if so ship your casseroles out as they may get devoured by tribesmen on the kyber pass and you could end up wearing a burka and become one of their wives as head cook.

Do not forget cold weather boots for Daisy, she will appreciate them.

When my uncle, the great Sir Ron led the 1976 Chipping Sodubry Girl Guides NE Ridge expedition he let me in on a few hints which I am happy to share with you.

1) Baxters Creme of Lobster soup is very nourishing and will stay warm up to 28,000 feet. It can stain courdoroy though.

2) Orange 3 ply nylon is the best cagoule material and Greenwoods can order it for you.

3) Climbing with a mascot is indeed a smashing idea. When three of the group became lost just short of the summit, they dug a snowhole and survived off their poodle - Binty, for 4 days.

4) Sir ron also kindly asks if you would sign the visitors book he left at the summit and adjust the satellite dish as the inhabitants of Lukla have lost he signal and are desperate to catch up on events at Hollyoaks.

This is great! Mary, you might want to contact Fred Becky, he is a very fit guy climber around your age, he might have good tips for you. By the way, your direct route to the summit is just what the alpinist community was waiting for, how come nobody thought of it before?? My only advice is please do not take that yellow jacket up there, you might want something with goose down inside, it might be a little chillier than in England...g luck!

I will try to contact Fred Becky. Does anyone know how to get in touch with him? Mary
